Much of James's work takes the form of mixed media collages or constructions, combining a variety of materials, imagery and found-objects, to create richly layered and textured pieces.

Common themes/imagery explored include the human body and natural history/ecology; using a range of recycled media to explore the cycle of growth and decay across seemingly disparate areas, and the physical and cultural connections between individuals and their local environment.
